Discovering the High Arctic
Published on 08.06.2010 - General Info
The peak season of expeditions on the pack ice now being over, we are taking the liberty of departing from the context of pure adventure to share something with you that is close to our hearts. Richard Weber's Arctic Watch Lodge.
Richard Weber of course needs no further introduction. First of all, he was one of those who reached the North Pole this spring  for the umpteenth time; then, with his many years of experience, he is one of the world's most known and most experienced polar explorers, with Borge Ousland, among others. His CV tells us that he has taken part in more than fifty expeditions to the North Pole and in the Arctic. His partner Josée Auclair, for her part, has polar letters of credential of her own; in 2001, she notably took part in the women-only Women Quest Expedition, all of whom reached the North Pole.
So what do the two of them do in summer ? For eleven seasons now, they have invited tourists, fairly unconventional ones at that, to come to visit the High Arctic from the vantage point of his Arctic Watch Lodge, located in Cunningham Creek, on Somerset Island, Nunavut.
On the programme, rambling in more than sublime landscapes obviously, kayaking, discovering things, stalking polar bear, arctic fox and musk ox, observing Beluga whales, and watching many species of birds. In short, a haven of paradise for all who adore huge virgin spaces and unspoilt nature.
