First person gives up after one week

Published on 06.04.2009 - General Info

Ever since setting out on Saturday 28th March, the only woman in the expedition, herself a surgeon, had not been feeling at all well. But despite the others agreeing to lighten her sledge, she was evacuated by helicopter on 3rd April.

This is very bad luck for the team of charming Finns on this expedition, who are aiming to cross Greenland on a relatively short trek. Teija Parkkinen was the only woman in the expedition. A surgeon back in civvy street and aged 41, Teija had not been feeling well since setting out and despite asking her companions to take some of the load from her sledge on day two of the trek, she felt she was holding the group back and decided to abandon her trip.

Apart from this setback, everything else is fine with the expedition. The team is covering about fifteen kilometres a day, managing to cope with the steep terrain as they have still not yet reached the plateau.
