More than 30 expeditions in the Antarctic this winter

Published on 17.10.2011 - General Info

Thanks to the Amundsen-Scott Centenary (the conquest of the South Pole back in 1911-12), there are more than 30 expeditions which are going to the Great South this coming winter.

This week we start to build the list of the polar expeditions which are aiming to do something important on the antarctic ice these coming weeks.

So far, we have four expeditions already on line :

  • Antarctic Ice Expedition : the belgian tandem Dansercoer/Deltour which aims to set a new world record and goes for a round and anti clockwise gigantic trek in the most remote ices of the 6th continent;
  • BSAE Expedition 2012 : a group of 24 Britons, all being in one of the british armies, in fact the British Armed Services which is mounting a land and sea exploration into the Antarctic Peninsula to commemorate Scott’s outstanding contribution to the nation and to science ;
  • Scott's 2012 v : a trio composed by famous bristish explorers Ben Saunders, Alastair Humphreys and Martin Hartley (reknown polar photographer), who will travel the same route as R.F. Scott in 1911-12, and who will try to finish it off, reaching this time Scott's hut ;
  • Inspire 2012 : an expedition of three (Britons) aiming to reinforce the London 2012 messages of inclusion, participation and accessibility; and helping inspire a generation during the excitement preceding the London Olympic and Paralmypic Games.

More info within the next days...
