“Save the polar bears!”

Published on 01.12.2009 - General Info

Eric Larsen is highly committed to keeping the polar world safe. In fact, he once wrote, "The role of the polar explorer today is not to explore the poles, but to protect them..."

Things are all going very smoothly for the trio being guided by Larsen. The three companions have fitted into the ice environment like a snail into its shell. Which means that they aren't talking much and aren't exchanging many views between themselves, but they are learning to experience and appreciate the things happening to them, to better value the landscape they come across and do everything they can to ensure that there is total harmony between the threesome and their surroundings.

26th November was a special day for the expedition. First of all because it was Dongsheng Liu's 36th birthday (his two companions gave him an additional dessert to celebrate!). The day was also special because it was Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Then, two days later, the news reached them from the States that after a process conducted by the Center for Biological Diversity, the Obama administration has proposed that a zone of over 200 000 square miles located between the edges of the Arctic pack-ice and the coasts of the neighbouring countries in the Arctic Ocean be designated as a critical habitat for the polar bear and be considered as untouchable.
The processes needed to support this project and ensure that there is maximum awareness about the wonder of nature that is the polar bear are featured at the website for the Eric Larsen expedition.

The latest position for the trio: on 1st December, they were at 82° 36.274' S / 83° 02.736' W.
