Twenty or so kilometres a day

Published on 14.04.2009 - General Info

Nothing special to report from this expedition and its five Finnish members as they make their way towards the east of Greenland, covering about 20 km a day.

While the surgeon Teija Parkinnen is now back home in Finland resting, the others continue to march steadily in the direction of eastern Greenland. Apart from the extreme temperatures the party is having to contend with (at minus 40°C, these are abnormally low temperatures for the season), they have not been slowed down in their progress. They have also just reached and passed the Dye 2 base.

In fact, the only real problem they have experienced so far is their laptop semi-breaking down. Most of the screen is silent and black, except for about 7 cm. So they are continuing to transmit their updates, because they are still able to make do with the remaining area of visible and accessible screen. However, the team leader has said that if the screen were to pack up altogether, they would no longer be able send back their daily positions as they have been doing so far.
