Still waiting in Punta

Published on 16.11.2011 - General Info

While some are on the field of their adventure already, some other expeditions like The South Pole Jubilee Expedition or the one of Felicity Aston solo are still waiting for their flight to Union Glacier.

Excerpts from Rory O'Connor's blog : "OK, time for an update. Todays news is that the weather is improving at Union Glacier Antarctica, but there is plenty of snow on the runway to be cleared. That could take 1-2 days to clear. So it looks like the end of the week before we could possibly get out. Its frustrating but we all know there is nothing we can do. Its doubly frustrating because the weather around Axel Heiberg has been fantastic for over a week now.

The days in Punta are taking on a Groundhog Day feeling now. Up, large breakfast, training, large lunch, go to the beach to try kiting and give up because of too much wind, large dinner, lots of talking and bed.

Picture below is the result of Teo´s first kiting experience in Punta. Twisted lines meant he nearly took an early bath trying to control it. As it was the kite went into the water and promptly filled up. Pulling it out was like using a dragnet. So soggy kite plus a large amount of beach meant the end of kiting for the day. ..."

According to ALE team, the snow must be removed from the Union Glacier runway before letting other flights to land on the ice. This operation could take two or three more days.
