So what does one do? Answer supplied by the Frenchman, Arnaud Tortel: "Like the polar bears, we roll in the snow (or rub ourselves down with it), because it can capture and retain several times its volume in water. Snow absorbs like a sponge the still liquid water, thus avoiding a thick layer of ice on the clothes, once the cold has taken hold.... "
